Saturday - May 24, 2008 This day was given over to dog training and information - along with fun, food. and fellowship. The purpose of this event was to educate the community about safe handling of canines in order to avoid injury to humans or canines and the unnecessary euthanasia of sound animals due to lack of knowledge and training. The day began with a "meet and greet" period where dog owners, their dogs, and others attending were able to mingle freely to talk, look over the training and boarding facilities, and ask questions. Although it was a blistering 88º day, observers could lounge under the big shade tree and enjoy the festivities with free refreshments. Training sessions began after a brief period. Dogs and owners were divided into 2 groups - the early basic training class and the more experience class. Sidney and Joe worked with the dogs and their owners on obedience training. People were able to observe training and what was expected.
While everyone rested in the shade of a big tree after training classes, Joe Simmons spoke briefly about what could be expected from our dogs. One interesting point he made was that the Doberman Pinscher was the only dog that was bred exclusively as a guard dog. Most dogs were bred for specific purposes and jobs. Although many are multi-talented and can do many things, there are some things you cannot expect out of some breeds. Dr. Teresa J. Drummond, a local veterinarian, accompanied by her dog Daisy, spoke on training or sports injuries to dogs. She told of some of the most common injuries, causes for injuries, and emergency first aid.
Following this, the personal protection dogs and their handlers provided a demonstation. These are not aggressive, vicious dogs that you should fear... unless you oppose their owner's or handler's demands. They attack only on command and can be called off on command. Enjoy some pictures of their demonstrations.
